‘Cats Fall to Mountaineers on Day One of Appalachian Invite

BOONE, N.C. – Davidson fell to the host Mountaineers, 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-19), in non-conference volleyball action on day one of the Appalachian Invitational, Friday evening at the Holmes Center.
The Wildcats, who entered on a three-match winning streak, fall to 3-2 on the young season, while App State remains unbeaten improving to 4-0.
Despite the setback, Mason Rooney turned in another solid all-around performance for Davidson with 9 kills, 13 assists and 7 digs. Freshman Hattie Rodriguez led the 'Cats with 10 kills, her second double-digit performance of 2018.
Davidson's Josie Treadwell paced both teams with 15 digs.
Kara Spicer and Emma Longley finished with 10-plus kills for the Mountaineers with 12 and 11, respectively. Becky Porter added a match-high 37 assists.
Appalachian State finished with a .287 attack percentage, including a .353 clip in the last, while the Wildcats hit just .196 after a .320 mark in the first.
Set 1
After Appalachian State jumped out to a 6-3 lead, Davidson responded with an 8-3 run, capped off by an Elise Edman service ace to go in front, 11-8.
Neither team led by more than three points in the opener, which featured 12 ties and six lead changes before the Mountaineers broke a 22-22 deadlock with a 3-1 spurt to close the set.
Set 2
Appalachian carried its momentum into the second frame as the Mountaineers led from start to finish and took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-19 win.
Set 3
Midway through the third, App State used a 6-2 run to grab the lead for good. The Mountaineers finished the set with 17 kills on 34 swings.
Up Next
Davidson will conclude its trip to Boone with a pair of tilts Saturday beginning with a 10 a.m. contest against Mississippi State followed by Clemson at 4 p.m.
