BOONE, N.C. – Mason Rooney was named to the all-tournament squad as Davidson split the final day of the Appalachian Invitational highlighted by a 3-2 win over Mississippi State. The Wildcats fell to Clemson, 3-0, in their final match of the two-day tournament at the Holmes Center.
With the split, Davidson moves to 4-3 on the young season.
Rooney, a senior from Atlanta, Ga., finished the event with 34 kills (11.3 kills per match), 56 assists (18.6) and 19 digs (6.3).

After falling to the tournament host last night, Davidson bounced back with a hard fought 3-2 (25-23, 25-15, 19-25, 19-25, 15-11) victory over Mississippi State, in the first of two on the final day.
In the morning match, Mason Rooney paced Davidson with 15 kills to go along with 25 assists and eight digs. In addition to Ellie Crosley connecting on 12-of-17 swings (.647), Ciera Cockrell also contributed double-digit kills with 10. Josie Treadwell led the Wildcat defense with 19 digs.
As a team, the Wildcats recorded 54 kills, five service aces and seven total blocks, including three solos from Cockrell.
Mississippi State's Deja Robinson was one of four Bulldogs to go over the 10-kill plateau with a match-high 20 on just 32 attempts (.563). Kendall Murr picked up 34 digs for State, while Morgan Kath set up 63 of her club's 74 kills.
Trailing 22-21 in the opener, the Wildcats closed the set with four straight to take the frame, 25-22.
The momentum carried over into the second as Davidson used an 11-3 streak to grab control before going up 2-0 with the convincing 25-15 win.
Mississippi State forced a decisive game with consecutive 25-19 triumphs in the third and fourth.
In the fifth and final set, the Wildcats broke a 4-4 deadlock with four unanswered on their way to a 15-11 match-clinching victory.

Clemson hit .373 and finished with 59 kills as the Tigers defeated Davidson, 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-23), in the final match of the Appalachian Invitational.
Despite the setback, Mason Rooney led the way for the Wildcats with 10 kills (.320) and 18 assists.
The Tigers, who connected on .541 of their swings in the opening set, were paced by Alyssa Deloney (13 kills), Brooke Bailey (12) and Solei Thomas (12). Gabby Easton finished with 51 assists.
Up Next
Davidson will enjoy a week break before returning to the court at the College of Charleston Invitational. The Wildcats will play UNC Asheville (10 a.m.) and Charleston Southern (2 p.m.) Saturday, before concluding the event against the host Cougars Sunday at 1 p.m.
