DAVIDSON, N.C. — Former Davidson men's tennis player Shamael Chaudhry is continuing his tennis career in the professional ranks, playing in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) on the pro circuit. The ITF Men's Circuit is a series of professional tennis tournaments held around the world that are organized by the International Tennis Federation.
After a stellar four-year career, Chaudhry recently played in the Jerba Open in a Futures Tournament that was hosted by Tunisia. The former Wildcat reached the main draw after scoring a pair of wins in the qualifying rounds. Chaudhry downed Ignacio Benzal Alia 6-3, 6-3 to open the round and then netted a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Daiki Kato of Japan to reach the main draw.
The winning continued in the main draw, coming from a set down to earn a hard-fought 0-6, 7-5, 6-4 triumph against Matteo De Vincentis of Italy. Chaudhry saw his tournament run end in the second round after a close 7-6(3), 7-5 defeat to top-seed Lucas Catarina, who went on to reach the semifinals.
A native of Walsall, United Kingdom, Chaudhry became the first Wildcat since Davidson Hall of Famer Jon Pastel '98 to earn first-team honors all four years after he was named Atlantic-10 All-First Team this past Spring in his final season. The senior set a personal best this spring with a team-high 16-5 singles record and went 5-0 in league matches. He had winning streaks of six and five, respectively, during the season and got all 16 wins at No. 2. With those 16 victories, Chaudhry ended his career with 49 total singles wins, which is the second-most in the program dating back to 2008.
Chaudhry was named A-10 Player of the Week, March 28, to give him four career weekly awards. In addition to an outstanding singles season, the senior excelled in doubles as he teamed up with fellow senior David Hager to go 10-8 at No. 2. The 10 wins helped Chaudhry finish with 36 for his career in doubles play.
In addition, Chaudhry excelled in the classroom as well by earning A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll honors twice. He graduated with a degree in economics.
