FAIRFAX, Va. – Davidson's Sarah Sears and Caroline Yarbrough picked up where they left off Saturday night, going 1-2 in the 5,000-meter run to cap a stellar outdoor campaign for women's track and field in the final day of the Atlantic 10 Championship Sunday at George Mason Stadium.
Sears, Saturday night's 10k champ, along with Yarbrough, ran away from the field for the second consecutive race and snapped the tape in 16:51.16. The Arlington, Va., native won her second event of the meet and fourth this season. Yarbrough took second in both the 5k and 10k, stopping the clock in 16:53.30 in the 5k.
Davidson earned 64.5 points to place sixth overall, registering 9.5 more points than in 2017. VCU claimed the team title, tallying 159 points. Dayton (109), George Mason (107), Massachusetts (93.5) and Rhode Island (77) rounded out the top programs.
Makayla Binter ended a nine-event weekend with a fifth place finish in the heptathlon, breaking her own school record with 4,558 points. Her heptathlon long jump mark of 5.60m (18'4.5) broke a 23-year old school record, breaking Lara Burkholder's 5.52m leap in 1995.
The 4x400m relay team of Katie Hines, Grace Loehr, Tori Long and Claire Nieusma broke the school record, stopping the clock in 3:50.36 to place seventh - nearly a second faster than last years A-10 Championship squad (3:51.01).
The 4x800m relay team of Maddie Hunter, Sophia Mills, Claire Nieusma and Eleni Daughters took second, racing the 3200 meters in 8:59.52. Hunter also placed fifth in the 1500m, stopping the clock in 4:27.94, while Mills took eighth in the 800m (2:14.26).
"I could not be prouder of our entire program! The women scored the most outdoor points since we joined the Atlantic 10 and the efforts of both Sarah Sears and Caroline Yarbrough cannot be understated," said director of track and field Jen Straub. "We did extremely well for a squad of just 16 young women, we are certainly heading in the right direction."
Sears and Yarbrough will head to the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Tampa, Fla. starting on Thursday, May, 24.
