ARLINGTON, Va. – Davidson baseball continued with its postseason upsetting ways, downing fourth-seeded Richmond 6-2 Wednesday at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park just outside of Washington, D.C.
Davidson improves to 33-19 on the season, just two wins away from tying the single-season record set a year ago. Richmond drops to 31-23 and will play in the consolation bracket game Thursday evening.
The 'Cats were led by senior Evan Roberts' performance, tossing his third complete game of the season while striking out six and allowing just one walk. Roberts' last complete game was also against Richmond back in mid-April, a shutout.
A trio of juniors in Justin Lebek, Max Bazin, and Eric Jones joined sophomore Brett Centracchio in pacing the offense, all posting two hits each. Lebek and Centracchio each homered, while Jones scored three times.
The game was a stalemate through three innings, until Jones led off the frame with a single to center, then waited just two pitches for Centracchio to blast his 10thlong ball of the season and put the 'Cats up 2-0.
Davidson repeated the process in the sixth, with Jones singling this time to left center before Lebek took the first pitch of the at bat over the left field wall and give Davidson the 4-0 advantage.
Richmond cut the lead in half, plating two unearned runs in the bottom of the frame, but the 'Cats responded with a run each in both the seventh and eighth innings to add insurance.
In the seventh, Jones was walked, advanced to second on a hit into left field from Centracchio, then moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a infield single from Lebek. In the eighth, Bazin led off the inning with a double, then scored on a laser up the middle from senior Cam Johnson.
The 'Cats advance through the winner's bracket, facing top-seeded Saint Louis Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
