DAVIDSON, N.C. — Capping off their impressive careers, seniors Shamael Chaudhry and Artem Khrapko were each named to the Atlantic 10 All-First Team as the league announced its all-conference and all-academic teams along with the top award winners Tuesday afternoon.
Joining the senior duo with A-10 postseason honors was sophomore Axel Fries, who was named to the all-second team a year after being named freshman of the year. This is the second season in a row he made the second team.
For Chaudhry and Khrapko, this is the second time the pair made the first team together after earning the honor in 2015 as freshmen.
A native of Walsall, United Kingdom, Chaudhry becomes the first Wildcat since Davidson Hall of Famer Jon Pastel '98 to earn first-team honors all four years. The senior set a personal best this year with a team-high 16-5 singles record and went 5-0 in league matches. He had winning streaks of six and five, respectively, during the season and got all 16 wins at No. 2. With those 16 victories, Chaudhry ended his career with 49 total singles wins, which is the second-most in the program dating back to 2008.
Chaudhry was named A-10 Player of the Week, March 28, to give him four career weekly awards. In addition to an outstanding singles season, the senior excelled in doubles as he teamed up with fellow senior David Hager to go 10-8 at No. 2. The 10 wins helped Chaudhry finish with 36 for his career in doubles play.
Moving up to No. 1 singles this season was Khrapko and he had a solid year with a 14-9 record and a 4-1 mark vs. the A-10. The Corning, N.Y., native opened the season as the first Wildcat nationally ranked in singles since Pastel. Assisting Khrapko to his 14 wins was a season-best eight-match win streak, getting five of those wins at home.
Khrapko, who was named A-10 Player of the Week three times this season to give him five for his career, closed out his singles career with 52 wins for the most in the program dating back to 2008. The senior teamed up with Fries in doubles action at No. 1 this year and had a team-best 12-7 record. He ended his career with 36 doubles victories.
Following up a stout freshman season, Fries was just as good in his second year with a 14-8 singles record to go with a 12-7 doubles mark. He went 10-4 at No. 4 singles position and got all 12 doubles wins at the top spot.
A five-time A-10 weekly award winner in his career, Fries has compiled a 32-13 singles mark to go with a 27-13 record in doubles during his first two seasons.
The A-10 named Dayton's Jordan Benjamin its Most Outstanding Performer, while Inigo Torre Martin and Paul Kostin of VCU earned the Most Outstanding Rookie Performer and Coach of the Year awards, respectively.
