NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Senior Ava Todd capped off her final career regular season by claiming the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week award as announced by the league office for matches played from April 9-15.
Todd, who shared the award this week with VCU's Noumea Witmus, won her first weekly honor this season and the sixth overall for her career. She also gave the Wildcats their seventh A-10 weekly award this season, joining Lindsay Song (4) and Alexandra Abele (2) who each have been honored as well.
The senior from Baltimore, Md., helped the Wildcats go 2-1 in their final three regular season matches by sporting a combined 4-0 record in singles and doubles against UNCG, George Washington and George Mason.
Todd pushed her singles win streak to a season-high eight in a row with three wins. She gave up just three total games in victories against UNCG (6-0, 6-1) and Mason (6-1, 6-1), while pulling out a three-set victory at GW (3-6, 6-0, 6-4). The two A-10 wins gave her a 6-0 league record for the year and a 23-0 mark during her four-year career.
With the three wins, Todd's overall season singles record moved to 14-2 (10-1 at No. 6), which is tied for tops on the team in wins. She has a career record of 62-16, the most wins dating back to 2000 ahead of Virginia Berry '10 (61-28) and Kelsey Linville '08 (61-21).
In addition to the three singles wins for the week, the senior teamed up with Abele in doubles to score a 6-1 win vs. George Mason. It was the duos first win together on the season.
Next up, Davidson takes some time off before heading to the A-10 Tournament, which takes play April 25-29 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
