ORLANDO, Fla. — Davidson captured its first Atlantic 10 win of the season Monday when it won four of the six singles matches against Duquesne to earn a hard-fought 4-3 decision on the tennis courts at the USTA National Campus Center.
Davidson (7-4, 1-0 A-10) improved to 3-1 in A-10 openers and is now 3-0 all-time vs. Duquesne, which fell to 6-5 overall on the season and 1-2 in league matches.
The Wildcats fell behind 1-0 after the Dukes took the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3 by the scores of 7-5 and 6-2. The 7-5 defeat at No. 2 ended Shamael Chaudhry and David Hager's season-best five-match win streak. The pair of Axel Fries and Artem Khrapko won their fifth together with a 7-5 victory at No. 1.
Khrapko led the way in singles action, winning his fifth match in a row on a straight-set 6-4, 6-0 decision at No. 1. Fellow classmate Chaudhry moved to 7-3 on the season with his first three-set victory of the season after falling in the first set, taking a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
At No. 5, Hager evened his record on the year to 5-5 with a solid 7-5, 6-2 win.
Tying for the team lead with his seventh singles win was Jack Riazzi, who moved to 7-1 on the season after a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 6 to give the 'Cats their final team point.
Davidson plays one more match in the state of Florida, traveling to take on Bethune Cookman, March 8.
