DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson nearly erased a six-goal second-half deficit before it ran out of time in falling at home to Mercer 13-12 Sunday afternoon in women's lacrosse inside Richardson Stadium.
Down 12-6 with over 16 minutes to go, the Wildcats (2-2) went on a 6-1 run to close within one goal. The final score came with six seconds off the stick of Christine Molinari with the assist going to Shayne Antolini, but the ensuing draw control was won by Mercer to end the game.
Shannon Blee, who scored three of the six goals during the run, finished with a career-high four. Tying Blee was Jordan Wood, who also had a career best. Sarah Kopp matched her personal best with three goals, while Olivia Carey dished out a season-best three assists.
Shayne Antolini pushed her team high assist total to 11 with a pair, while season points leader Molinari had a goal and an assist to give her 16 points on the season.
Mercer (2-3) had three double-digit goal scorers, led by Kate Leone's five goals. Kelly Hagerty had three goals, while Lindsey Zeltwanger assisted on six of the Bears' 12 goals.
The Bears opened the game up leading 6-2 after nearly 14 minutes of play, getting four goals from Leone and two from Hagerty.
Wood helped get the Wildcats offense finally going again at the 5:22 mark after not scoring for almost 13 minutes with a free position goal. It started a quick 3-0 run over a two-minute stretch and Davidson was within one at 6-5.
Mercer answered with two more goals before Wood netted her eighth goal of the season with 45 seconds to make it 8-6 at the break.
Much like the start of the first half, Mercer opened in control with four straight goals to double up the 'Cats 12-6 at the 16:13 mark.
Blee started the rally for Davidson with a goal at the 14:28 mark and added another score 10 minutes later to cut the deficit to 12-9.
Mercer scored the eventual game-winner at 3:51 to make it 13-9, but not before the Wildcats had one last chance. Blee scored her 13th goal of the season 41 seconds later followed by a Kopp goal at 1:29 and Davidson was within 13-11. Molinari then scored the final goal with six ticks left.
Davidson had a 30-24 edge on shots and won the battle of draw controls, 15-13, while converting 4-of-9 free-position attempts. Mercer scooped up 25 groundballs to the Wildcats' 19.
Goalkeeper Rose Woolson finished with six saves and picked up a season-best five groundballs. Kopp tied her personal best with six draw controls and Wood converted all four of the 'Cats' free-position attempts, going 4-for-7.
Davidson will play host to Colgate next Saturday, March 10, at 1 p.m.
