NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Coming off an unbeaten week, senior Artem Khrapko claimed his second Atlantic 10 weekly award this year by being named the men's tennis player of the week by the league office for matches played from March 5-11.
Khrapko wins his fourth career weekly honor and gives Davidson its second this year, both claimed by the senior who earned his first honor this season, Feb. 28.
The Corning, N.Y., native had a stellar week, finishing a combined 6-0 in singles and doubles play during matches against Duquesne, Bethune-Cookman and Saint Joseph's. Khrapko went 3-0 each in singles and doubles, keeping his winning streaks alive in both, while earning his first two A-10 wins of the season.
In singles play, Khrapko cruised in straight sets at No. 1 by scoring wins of 6-4, 6-0 vs. Duquesne, and then 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-1 vs. the Wildcats and the Hawks. The three wins pushed his season record to a team-best tying 9-4 and gave him a season-high seven-match win streak. It is the second-longest streak of his career after rattling off a 12-match streak as a freshman.
Khrapko teamed with Axel Fries at No. 1 doubles to pick up wins of 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 last week, pushing their win streak to three in a row. They ran their season record to a team-best 7-4. Khrapko is two wins away from tying his freshman doubles mark of nine wins.
After facing Navy today, March 13, Davidson returns to Atlantic 10 play when it travels to Washington, D.C., to face George Mason and George Washington, March 24-25.
