WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Senior Sarah Sears was invited to compete in the Camel City Classic Elite 3k Saturday and did not disappoint as the Davidson women's track and field program competed Friday and Saturday and JDL Fast Track.
For the second consecutive week, Sears took down the Davidson 3,000-meter record, this time making the most of a field of professional runners and elite collegiate athletes. The Arlington, Va., native stopped the clock in 9:20.92, almost 13 seconds faster than her time last weekend on BU's banked track. Her time currently ranks in the top 20 in the nation.
The Wildcats have broken seven school records between last week's BU Terrier Classic and this week's Camel City Classic. The distance medley relay team of freshman Eleni Daughters, Maddie Hunter, Tori Long and Sophia Mills combined to stop the clock in 11:46.06, just .46 seconds faster than last years Atlantic 10 Championship team, and were first overall. Davidson utilized their depth at distance to field another worthy DMR team of Katie Hines, Claire Nieusma, Sierra Ponthier and Caroline Yarbrough and stopped the clock in 11:55.52, second only to their teammates.
On Friday, senior Stephanie Hautamaa cleared 3.55-meters (11'7.75) to place third overall and snap her record by 4-inches.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Hines, Nieusma, Saidah Rahman and Jennifer Thompson placed sixth with a time of 4:03.74.
Davidson returns to the track Thursday, Feb. 8 at the JDL Team Challenge.
