ELON, N.C. — Despite overcoming deficits of 10 and eight points in the fourth quarter, Davidson was unable to overcome a four-point deficit in overtime and fell to Elon Wednesday night in a 73-72 setback inside the Schar Center in women's basketball.
Down 73-69 with 34 ticks left, Katie Turner canned a big three-ball from the left wing to get the 'Cats (4-5) within one with 19 seconds left.
They then forced a turnover on Elon to get the ball back for one last chance to win the game. Justine Lyon drove the lane and missed a jumper, but got her own rebound with 14 seconds left. She then drove again and dished the ball off to freshman Chloe Welch, who got off a clear shot with two seconds on the clock, but it fell short and the final horn sounded.
Elon (4-4) took the lead for good in overtime with back-to-back three-pointers to start the extra period.
Lyon and Sarah Donovan led the way for the Wildcats with double-doubles. The senior Lyon had 16 points and 11 rebounds, a season-best six on offense, while Donovan registered 16 points and 10 rebounds, a personal-best eight on offense, to go with a career-high five steals.
Lyon helped Davidson force overtime by scoring the final six points in the last minute and a half to overcome a 62-54 deficit in the fourth quarter.
Turner hit for a game-high 19 points, 10 combined in the fourth and overtime periods, and pocketed a career-high seven steals. Davidson as a team had a season-best 18 steals and forced 31 turnovers, turning those into 22 points.
Elon put three in double figures led by Ariel Colon's double-double on 16 points and 12 rebounds. Saadia Munford scored 15, going 10-for-10 at the free-throw line, while Jaylin Powell had 10 points.
The Wildcats were down by 10 (54-44) in the fourth quarter before running off a 9-0 run to get the score to 54-53 at the mid-point in the quarter. But, Elon pushed its lead back to 62-54 with 2:06 to go until Lyon guided the 'Cats back again to force overtime.
Davidson was down 47-42 after the third quarter when Elon turned a 39-36 deficit into a lead by using an 11-3 run to close the quarter.
