CLEMSON, S.C. — Senior Justine Lyon scored a season-high 31 points and Davidson used an early fourth-quarter run to pull away in claiming a 90-80 road win against Clemson Sunday afternoon inside Littlejohn Coliseum in women's basketball action.
Davidson (5-5) snapped the Tigers' five-game win streak to send them to 7-4 on the season. It was the Wildcats' second win in a row in the series, both coming on the road.
Lyon hit 12-of-20 from the floor, including three of the 'Cats' season-high tying 11 three-pointers, and added four assists. The guard scored 16 combined points in the final two quarters, including Davidson's final 12 points in the third quarter to start the winning rally.
Down 57-56 near the end of the third quarter, Lyon nailed a buzzer-beating three-ball from deep at the top of the key for a 59-57 lead. The momentum carried into the start of the fourth quarter as Davidson opened with a 13-4 run to go up 72-61 at the 6:31 mark. It never looked back in leading by as many as 14 twice on its way to the 10-point victory.
For the second time this year, the Wildcats put five players in double figures. Joining Lyon was Kianna Speight with 15 points, followed by Sarah Donovan with 14 (12 in the fourth quarter), Cassidy Gould with 12 points and Katie Turner with 10.
Turner dished out a career-high nine assists and Davidson had a season-best 22 dimes on 30 made field goals. The Wildcats shot a season-best 53.6 percent from the floor, including a 9-of-16 performance in the fourth quarter when it scored 31 points, also a season-best.
The Wildcats went 19-for-22 at the free-throw line, hitting 10-of-12 in the closing minute to seal up the win.
Clemson got 30 points from Simone Westbrook, while Kobi Thornton added 13 points and eight rebounds. The Tigers were held to 38.8 percent shooting, but had a 39-32 edge in rebounds (22 on offense) and went 24-for-28 at the charity stripe.
After a slow start to the game that saw both teams combine to shoot 1-of-15 from the floor, Davidson found its offense with a 5-for-9 shooting spurt to go up 16-11 and eventually take a 16-14 lead at the end of quarter one.
The hot streak continued for the 'Cats into the next quarter, hitting their first five shots and running off a 13-0 run to open the second quarter. A three-ball by Lyon at the 5:06 mark made it 32-16, the biggest lead for the Wildcats. Lyon went onto score 11 in the quarter.
Clemson countered with an 18-8 run to close out the second quarter and get within 40-34 at halftime.
The third quarter saw the two teams trade the lead eight times before Lyon hit the three-pointer for a 59-57 lead.
