Charlotte Bests Davidson in Cross-County Rivalry Game, 78-66

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Despite overcoming a 16-point deficit early, Davidson came up short on the road against cross-county rival Charlotte in a 78-66 setback Friday night in women's basketball inside Halton Arena.
The Wildcats were up 58-54 after Sarah Donovan swished home a jumper early in the fourth quarter, but Charlotte overtook them by using a 17-4 run over the next six minutes and eventually led by as many as 13 on its way to the win.
For the second game in a row, senior Kianna Speight drained a career-high tying six three pointers to pace Davidson (6-6) with 18 points. Donovan finished with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Justine Lyon came off the bench for 11 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Ally Welling had her second double-digit rebounding game of the season with 10 rebounds to go with eight points and Katie Turner dished out a game-high seven of the Wildcats' 18 assists.
Charlotte (7-3) put three in double figures, led by Mariah Linney's 22 points. Octavia Jett-Wison tallied 19 points and Jazmin Harris had 12. Jade Phillips pulled in a team-high nine rebounds and added eight points, four assists and two steals.
Jett-Wilson scored 11 of her points during a 19-0 run in the second quarter that saw the 49ers turn a 22-19 deficit into a 38-22 lead over a five and a half minute stretch.
Davidson overcame that deficit by scoring the final seven points of the quarter to close within 38-29 at the half and then produced an outstanding third quarter. The Wildcats outscored the 49ers 25-15 in the third, getting four three-pointers from Speight to take a 54-53 lead at the end of the quarter. They hit 10-of-17 field goals in the quarter, including 4-of-8 from behind the arc.
Both teams played to an even 19-all tie after the first 10 minutes to start the game. Lyon finished the quarter scoring the final seven Wildcat points to help tie things up.
Charlotte held a slim 42-40 edge on the glass and turned 17 Wildcat turnovers into 24 points, while getting 36 total points in the paint. Davidson finished with 16 second-chance points on 12 offensive rebounds and scored 26 points in the paint.
Both teams shot nearly identical from floor, with the 'Cats at 41.3 percent and the 49ers at 41.2 percent. Davidson hit eight total threes, but missed their final nine, all in the fourth quarter.
Davidson will enjoy a nine-day break for Christmas before returning to the hardwood to take on nationally-ranked N.C. State, Dec. 30.
