WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –The Davidson men's track and field team opened the season with impressive performances at the JDL Early Bird Classic Sunday at JDL Fast Track.
Three Wildcat freshmen opened their collegiate careers with wins.
Raphael Oettl snapped the tape in the mile with a time of 4:27.75. Davidson has three 'Cats in the top-five overall, Oettl in first, classmate Eli Minsky in fourth and sophomore Iain Anderson in fifth across the line.
Freshman Cory Gaither won the 60-meter hurdles, out-leaning the nearest competitor to stop the clock in 8.39 seconds. Senior Sean Caveney took fourth with a time of 8.56 seconds.
Davidson had similar success in the 800 meters. Freshman Bryce Kalsu claimed first with a time of 1:56.22, while sophomores Max Higgins and Drake Taylor placed third and fourth, respectively.
"This was a very solid opener for us. The freshmen showed that they will be major contributors to our team this year, and I thought Cory and Bryce showed that they aren't afraid of competition at the collegiate level," said head coach Renny Waldron. "Headed into the break, we know we have a lot of work to do, but feel confident that we are where we need to be and headed in the right direction. We are looking forward to having the entire team in action at our first meet after the break."
Other notable performances included junior Garrett Nickelson, who placed third in the 400 meters (50.85 seconds), while James Davis cleared 14'7.25 in the pole vault for third. Junior Stockton McGuire also cleared 14' to place fifth.
Davidson returns to action Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Wake Forest Invitational, to be competed at JDL Fast Track.
