DAVIDSON, N.C. –Davidson senior Tony Palumbo and freshman Mitchell Trigg swept their bouts, but wrestling fell in a pair of dual matches against Sacred Heart (27-19) and Southern Conference foe Virginia Military Institute (29-13) Saturday at John M. Belk Arena.

With the losses Davidson falls to 2-3 overall and opens SoCon action at 0-1.

The Wildcats got off to a fast start against SHU, leading 15-6 halfway through the match. Freshman Kyle Gorant (133) picked up his team-leading sixth fall of the year in just 2:23, while classmate Caleb Ziebell (141) earned a first period technical fall, 17-0. Palumbo extended the DC lead with a major decision at 157 pounds.

SHU changed momentum with an injury default at 165 pounds and rattled off three consecutive wins, including a pair of pins to take a 27-15 lead into the final bout. Trigg finished off the match with a 10-0 major.

VMI jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the finale despite valiant efforts from Gorant and Ziebell. Senior Aidan Conroy got Davidson on the board with a tight 3-0 win, while Palumbo got his hand raised again for a 5-2 decision, cutting the deficit in half, 12-6.

Following a forfeit and fall that both benefitted the Keydets, The Wildcats finished the match with wins in two of the final three bouts. Junior Conor Fenn earned a 9-0 major, while Trigg gutted out a 3-0 decision.

With the wins, Palumbo moves to 8-6 overall, while Trigg continues a stellar rookie start, moving to 11-3 to open his collegiate career.
