Davidson Has Strong Showing at Jimmy Powell Tennis Invite

ELON, N.C. — Competing in their second Fall event, the Davidson women's tennis team had a nice showing at the Jimmy Powell Invitational hosted by Elon Saturday and Sunday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Attending the invite was Davidson, Winthrop and Appalachian State as well as host Elon.
Seven Wildcats took part in the two-day invite, with all seven winning at least one singles match on the weekend.
In the JP Phoenix singles bracket, freshman Elizabeth Truluck won the draw title. She opened with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 win over Elon's Alex Koniaev and then scored a 6-0, 6-2 decision over another Phoenix player. The South Carolina native closed out with a solid 6-2, 7-6 win over Winthrop's Ellie Burns in the final.
Samantha Armas regrouped from a first round setback to earn a 6-4, 6-3 win and then also scored a 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 victory against Maria Paraja of Elon.
Placing fourth in the JP Maroon singles bracket was senior Megan Scholvinck. The senior scored a 6-1, 7-6 win over Montana Moore of Elon for one of her wins.
Mira Gladstone and Gabrielle Centenari also took part in the JP Maroon singles bracket, with the freshman Gladstone earning a 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 win. Centenari lost in her first match, but came back for a 6-0, 7-6 victory vs. Alya Mourad of Winthrop and followed up with another win against Teodora Sevo of Appalachian State.
The duo of Alexandra Abele and Alyssa Hahn played in the JP Gold singles bracket. Abele reached the final match, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Mia Wallace of Elon and then scored a 7-6, 6-3 triumph vs. another Elon foe. Her weekend was halted with a 6-3, 6-4 setback to an ASU player.
Hahn won a 6-3, 6-2 decision against Elon before falling 6-2, 7-6 to Maria Jose Zaharias of Appalachian State.
Davidson also competed in the two doubles draws. Scholvinck earned a pair of wins in the JP Maroon bracket, first with Hahn in a 6-3 victory against a pair from ASU and then later with Truluck in a tightly, played 7-6 match against another team from Appalachian State.
Hahn also teamed with Abele in the JP Gold bracket to earn a 6-2 win against Winthrop. Abele and Gladstone scored a 6-3 victory against a duo from Winthrop, while Armas had wins of 6-4 and 7-6 vs. Elon by teaming up with Centenari and Gladstone in each match.
Davidson takes some time off before heading to the ITA Regionals and the North Carolina Central Invitational, Oct. 18-21.
