SEASON REWIND
Davidson opened the season ranked 11th in the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Southeast Regional Poll and have spent four of six weeks among the ranks. The 'Cats check in at 11th ahead of the A-10 Championship and following a first place team finish at the Royals XC Challenge. Senior Caroline Yarbrough posted a new personal best 5k time of 17:04, the third fastest XC 5k run in program history. Fellow senior Sophia Mills continued her progress with a new personal record time of 17:38. All five scorers at the Royals XC Challenge ran their fastest times ever. The 'Cats also competed at the Louisville XC Classic and the Charlotte Opener, led by Yarbrough on both accounts. Junior Maddie Hunter competed well at Louisville, placing 33rd overall, while classmate Susannah Cate and freshman Rachel Shapiro also scored. Yarbrough was named the A-10 Performer of the Week on Oct. 16, the first weekly accolade of the season for Davidson.
PRESEASON COACHES' POLL
The Wildcats were tabbed to finish third in the 2018 Preseason Coaches' Poll released back on Aug. 30. Davidson registered 166 points, just ahead of Duquesne (154). The 2017 champion, Dayton Flyers, were predicted to win their second straight with 186 points, edging out Richmond (185). The poll is voted on by the A-10 member coaches.
SCOUTING THE FIELD
Four Atlantic 10 programs enter the championship in the USTFCCCA Regional polls, including the 'Cats in 11th of the Southeast Region. Richmond comes in just ahead of Davidson in the Southeast (9th), while Dayton ranks 14th in the Great Lakes and Duquesne (14th) and La Salle (15th) round out the Mid-Atlantic poll.
2017 A-10 CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP
Davidson placed third at the 2017 conference championship in Leesburg, Va., the highest team finish in the A-10 era and best overall since the 'Cats claimed runner-up at the 2007 Southern Conference Championship. Four Wildcats earned All-Conference honors for placing in the top 15 led by Sarah Sears '18 second place finish. Caroline Yarbrough (10th), Laurel Sheffield '18 (12th) and Maddie Hunter (15th) joined Sears on the All-A-10 squad. Susannah Cate rounded out the Wildcat scorers.
COACHES COMMENTS - JEN STRAUB
"This season the team has been focusing on the daily and weekly process of getting better. The women have been paying attention to detail on ways to improve, including stretching, sleeping and recovery. I am confident with our preparation, if we continue to do what works for us, we will go out on Saturday and compete well against a very talented A-10 field!"
