KINGSTON, R.I. – To get its fifth straight win, the Davidson volleyball team had to play into the fifth set – an extended version at that – at Rhode Island Sunday afternoon.

The Wildcats (12-8 overall, 5-4 Atlantic 10) were up to the challenge, however, and secured the 3-2 victory and the team's longest win streak since 2004 with a 21-19 win in the decisive set. The final point was secured on a block by Alison Jennings and Mason Rooney.

"I never met a win I didn't like," said Davidson coach Chris Willis, whose team swept a weekend of A-10 road games for the first time. "The performance wasn't our best, and we still found a way to win."

Ciera Cockrell led Davidson with a career-high 24 kills in what Willis said was "one of the best matches of her career."

"Ciera was at her best when we needed her," he said.

After two sets, it appeared no drama would be necessary. Davidson edged the Rams 26-24 in the first, then won the second 25-17. But Rhode Island (7-14, 1-8) rallied for 25-23 and 25-14 wins in the third and fourth, respectively, to force the fifth.

Davidson led 12-7 in the fifth before the Rams scored seven straight points to put the pressure on the Wildcats. But Davidson won the next three points, and the teams stayed tied or within a point of one another until a Rams service error and the Jennings/Rooney block ended it. Willis was proud of how his team responded.

"They kept their composure and played each point, one at a time," he said.

Davidson's Katharine Franz had 10 kills and Hattie Rodriguez had seven, while Rooney added five kills, 19 assists and 10 digs. Josie Treadwell and Lauryn Albold had career-bests with 27 digs and nine blocks, respectively, and Sydney Champaigne had a team-high 24 assists.

After losing four straight beginning in late September, Davidson has now defeated N.C. Central, George Washington, George Mason, Fordham and Rhode Island in order.

Up Next
Davidson will play its next two at home. The Wildcats host Saint Louis Friday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m., then host Dayton two days later at 1 p.m.
