RICHMOND, VA. – Two wins, including a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard freestyle, highlighted Friday evening's performance by the Davidson men in a two-day swim meet with George Mason at the Richmond Duals.
Davidson's Walter Dauksher won the 200 free in a time of 1:42.29, followed closely by teammate Matt Bode (1:43.83), while Davidson's Owen Corkery took first in the 200 backstroke (1:53.87).
"Walt and Bode did a great job to swim away from the competition in the 200 – a great race for the Wildcats," said Davidson coach John Young. "Owen's last 50 in the 200 back was a blazing split (27.59), out-splitting the field by more than a second."
Dauksher also placed second in the 100 free (46.91) and joined Bode, Thacher Scannell and Brian Hynes on a second-place 400 free relay (3:07.87) effort. Hynes, Kevin Andrews, Will Tabor and Alex Strasser took second in the 200 medley relay (1:35.16) and Scannell trimmed nearly a minute off his best-ever time in the 1,650 free (16:16.90) while placing second.
George Mason finished the first day of action with a 126-76 advantage in team scoring.
"The men raced well tonight, and swam well, but we've got to do a better job finding speed through our walls," said Young. "It'll be a challenge for them to climb out from the hole they're in, but it's not impossible. We've just got to be better."
Swimming resumes Saturday at 10 a.m.
