KINGSTON, R.I. — Senior Mackenzie Latt scored a career-high 32 points, recorded her second double-double in the past three games and Davidson cruised to a 79-67 Atlantic 10 road win at Rhode Island Wednesday morning during an Education Day game inside the Ryan Center.
The Wildcats evened their league record at 5-5, the most wins since joining the A-10 in 2014-15, and moved to 10-13 overall. The win was their third straight on the road in A-10 action, setting a new program best.
Latt picked up her sixth double-double of the season, and the 25th of her career, on game highs of 32 points (shot a team season high and career best 14-for-25 from the floor) and 12 rebounds. It was the senior's second 30-point outing in the past three games after scoring 31 vs. UMass last week. Latt had seven of her rebounds on the offensive end to tie a season high, while pocketing a season-best six steals.
The forward, who netted 24 points in the second half alone, helped the Wildcats open up the game by scoring 14 points in the third quarter to give them a lead of 62-40 after holding a 39-28 lead at the half. Davidson outscored the Rams 23-12 in the quarter and would lead by as many as 28 points in the fourth quarter.
Reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week Katie Turner scored 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including three triples, and dished out a team season-high eight assists to go with five rebounds. Justine Lyon dropped in 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
Rhode Island (3-20, 1-9 A-10) was led by Nicole Jorgensen's 12 points, while Elemy Colome came off the bench for 11.
Davidson came out hot from behind the arc, nailing five three-pointers, two each by Turner and Lyon, and never looked back in going up 21-15 at the end of the first quarter.
Speight drilled home the Wildcats' sixth triple to open the second quarter and later a fast-break layup by Sarah Donovan made it 37-21 with under two minutes to go. The 'Cats could have pushed the lead out more during the quarter, but went just 5-of-14 at the free-throw line.
The Rams finished the quarter on an 8-2 run to close within 39-28 at halftime before Davidson pulled away in the third.
The Wildcats went an uncharacteristic 11-for-22 overall for the game at the line, but shot 44.1 percent from the floor and hit 8-of-16 from three-land. They dominated the boards with a 45-30 advantage and got 20 of those on the offensive end, while tying their season high with 14 steals and scoring 28 points off of 21 Ram turnovers.
Davidson remains on the road this weekend, playing a 3 p.m. game at Saint Louis, Feb. 4.
