ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Senior Mackenzie Latt scored a team-high 20 points and reached 1,500 for her career, but all five Saint Louis starters scored in double figures in sending Davidson to an 88-72 defeat on the road Sunday afternoon in Atlantic 10 women's basketball inside Chaifetz Arena.
Latt became the fourth player in program history to reach the 1,500-point mark and is just the second-ever to have that many points and over 800 career rebounds. The senior fell one rebound short of another double-double on the afternoon.
The Billikens (13-10, 7-3 A-10), who shot 52.5 percent for the game, were led by Jenny Vliet's 21 points, getting 15 from behind the arc. Paige Rakers added 17 points, while Madison Gits (15 points, 14 rebounds) and Jackie Kemph (12 points, 10 assists) recorded double-doubles. Jordyn Frantz rounded the five starters with 13 points and dished out eight assists.
Joining Latt in double digits for the 'Cats (10-14, 5-6 A-10) was Justine Lyon with 16 points and Sarah Donovan tallied her first career double-double on 15 points and 10 boards, a season-high tying six on offense. Katie Turner hit for 11 points and dished out five assists.
Davidson was within 67-60 after Latt hit a jumper to cap a 9-3 run to open the fourth quarter. It was as close as the Wildcats got, as SLU answered with a 10-0 run to go up 77-60 and 5:54 left. A pair of and-one plays were part of the Billikens' game-changing run.
Saint Louis used a 17-8 run in the middle of the third quarter to go 55-43 before ending the quarter with a 64-51 lead.
Davidson fell behind early, 14-6, but finished strong behind Lyon's back-to-back threes from the left side to close the quarter and bring it within 18-16.
The second quarter went back-and-forth, with SLU winning the quarter, 20-17, to take a 38-33 lead at the break. Donovan kept the Wildcats close by scoring seven points and pulling in five boards, three on offense.
Behind Donovan and Latt, Davidson won the battle on the glass, 39-33, and got 15 second-chance points. Saint Louis countered by scoring 44 points in the paint and had 19 points off of 15 Wildcat turnovers. It also dished out 25 assists as a team.
