DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior Kelly Friers paced Davidson volleyball (6-3) in their nightcap victory, trumping Wofford (6-4) 3-1 in the finale of the Wildcat Classic in Belk Arena by scores of 22-25, 25-13, 25-13, 25-16. They challenged Florida Gulf Coast (4-5) earlier in the day before falling 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 22-25, 12-25, 11-15).
Friers, Davidson's all-tournament selection, finished the day with 37 kills and 11 digs. Junior Katharine Franz collected 22 kills across the two matches, and classmate Mason Rooney was close behind with 17. Rooney also recorded 63 assists on the day and six service aces, while freshman Ellie Crosley added 11 kills and a team-high eight blocks.
Over the course of the weekend, Friers collected 49 kills to lead the 'Cats.
MATCH ONE: FLORIDA GULF COAST 3, DAVIDSON 2
Friers tallied 18 kills in the 'Cats five setter. Rooney turned in her third double-double of the season with 11 kills and 31 assists. Rooney also has two triple-doubles on the season.
The 'Cats took a sluggish start, falling behind by as many as six points before taking three straight and eventually reaching a 14-14 stalemate after a backrow kill from sophomore DS Josie Treadwell. The 'Cats went on to record five straight points to take the set 25-23 after back-to-back kills from junior captain Ciera Cockrell and a kill and ace from Rooney.
The Eagles reversed the role in Set 2, winning 25-23 after the frame saw a match-high 11 tied scores.
The Wildcats fired back to take the third set 25-22 as Rooney slammed in the final two kills, but Davidson's offense stalled in Set 4 as FGCU powered to a 25-12 victory and force a fifth set, which they went on to claim 15-11 after never trailing in the series.
MATCH TWO: DAVIDSON 3, WOFFORD 1
Friers turned in her fifth consecutive double-digit kills performance, falling one shy of tying her career-high with 19 kills. Franz added 12, including six in the fourth set alone.
After reaching a 22-22 stalemate in the opening stanza (with 12 total tied scores), the Terriers rallied for three straight to take the set 25-23.
From there, Davidson ignited, outhitting their opponents by a .402 to .173 hitting percentage. The 'Cats dominated the next two frames, leading by as many as 12 before taking decisive back-to-back 25-13 decisions.
The fourth set presented more of a challenge, seeing four lead changes and five tied scores before Davidson powered through, capitalizing on two consecutive aces from Rooney and sharp hitting from rookie Remi Lehnertz.
Lehnertz finished the day with a .400 hitting efficiency, posting five kills on 10 attempts.
