CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Davidson volleyball dropped a grueling five-set battle with cross-county rival Charlotte Tuesday in Halton Arena by scores of 14-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-22, 13-15. The Wildcats slip to 6-4 on the season, while Charlotte, winners of seven straight, improves to 10-3.
Senior Kelly Friers again led the offense, posting 14 kills for a .323 efficiency. Junior Katharine Franz tied her career-high she set Sunday, registering 12 kills. Junior Mason Rooney turned in her second consecutive double-double outing with 11 kills and 33 assists. The performance marks her fourth double-double of the season.
"Our competitive level wasn't where it needed to be tonight," head coach Chris Willis said. "We need to get back in the gym and commit ourselves to better execution and finishing plays."
The Wildcats were sluggish in the opening stanza, failing to ever lead in the set, dropping it 25-14. Davidson battled back in Set 2, reaching a 21-21 stalemate before back-to-back kills from freshman middle Ellie Crosley boosted the 'Cats momentum as they pulled through to even the match with a 25-22 score.
Davidson and the Niners went through 11 tied scores during the third frame before Charlotte edged out the 'Cats 25-21, and late-set heroics from Friers and Franz allowed the 'Cats to claim Set 4 25-22 and force a fifth frame.
The fifth set saw six ties, as late as the 12-12 mark, but Wildcat miscues handed critical points to the 49ers to take the set 15-13 and the match 3-2. The 49ers were paced by senior outside Janell Sparks' career-high 20 kills.
Davidson returns to action this weekend, traveling to Atlanta, Ga., for the Georgia State Invitational beginning Saturday, Sept. 16.
