DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team finished up the second day of their own invitational by registering five singles wins Saturday on the hard courts of the Davidson Tennis Courts.
Sophomore Thomas Mason tallied two of those singles wins for 16 points in victories against Campbell and USC Upstate. In his first match, Mason picked up a strong 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 5 vs. the Fighting Camels. Capping the day was a super tie-breaker 10-8 win at the same position vs. the Spartans after he split the first two sets, 4-6 and 6-4.
Senior Shamael Chaudhry recorded a dramatic win at No. 1 against his Campbell opponent to earn 16 points. He took the first set, 6-4, but then lost a close tie-breaker, 7-4, in the next set to set up a super tie-breaker to determine the winner. The senior rolled with a 10-3 victory.
The freshmen duo of Yash Parikh and Alexander Loope earned the other two singles wins on the day for Davidson. Parikh picked up 12 points with his No. 3 singles win of 6-4, 6-4 against USC Upstate. The first-year player also had a very close match against his Campbell opponent at No. 2 singles, falling in a 5-7, 7-5, 10-6 decision.
Loope played at the No. 7 position and cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 shutout victory against UNC Asheville. He earned himself four points with the win.
Just missing wins against Campbell was Axel Fries, Artem Khrapko and Matthew Rose. All three Wildcats went to super tie-breakers in their matches. Fries, at No. 3 singles, won his first set 6-2, but then dropped a second-set tie-breaker before falling 10-7 in the super tie-breaker.
Khrapko played at No. 4 and went down to the wire, falling in a first-set tie-breaker before regrouping to net a 7-5 win in the second set. He went back-and-forth in the super tie-breaker, but came out on the short end, 11-9.
Falling in his first set, 6-4, at No. 7, Rose won a tie-breaker (10-8) in the second set to set up the super tie-breaker to determine the match. The sophomore battled to the finish before falling 13-11.
The invitational is a points system, with points being determined based on position. The No. 1 singles position is worth 16 points and going two points down at each position to No. 8, which is worth two points. The top doubles spot is worth eight points, then going down to No. 4, which is worth two.
Davidson and the rest of the field wrap up the invitational Sunday with some doubles and singles matches, starting at 10 a.m.
