DAVIDSON, N.C. — First-year head coach Gayle Coats Fulks completed her staff with the hire of James Janssen as assistant coach for the Davidson women's basketball program.
"I'm very excited to announce the addition of James to our coaching staff," said Coats Fulks. "Over the last five years, I have been continuously impressed with his incredible basketball knowledge and his ability to build relationships and earn the trust of players. His leadership qualities and strong ability to teach will assist in developing our players both on and off the court. Adding James to our staff also brings an international dimension to our program; something I am excited about and believe will be very beneficial. He has built great relationships in his home country of Australia, and we look forward to extending our recruiting network there."
An Australian native, Janssen joins the Wildcats after having spent the previous five seasons at Wake Forest. As a graduate student and volunteer for the Deacons, he worked closely with Coats Fulks. He assisted with player development, on-campus recruiting, opposition scouting, camps, and sports science consulting. The past two years at Wake Forest saw them with back-to-back NIT berths, making the second round in both years.
"I'm thrilled and honored for the opportunity to join the women's basketball staff here at Davidson," said Janssen. "I've been fortunate to work closely with Coach Coats-Fulks these past five years. She is absolutely a rising star in the profession, and I am excited to assist her in taking this program to new levels in the Atlantic-10. Davidson College epitomizes everything that is great about the student-athlete experience, and to have the chance to invest in a program with these values is a dream come true."
Prior to his time with the Demon Deacons, Janssen had an extensive playing and coaching career with the Blackburn Vikings Basketball Club in Melbourne, Australia. A pass-first point guard, Janssen's 10-year playing career in the semi-professional BIGV competition was highlighted by captaining his side to a 2011 BIGV Championship, and consistently being among the leagues assist leaders.
His coaching career at Blackburn involved coaching boys and girls of a variety of ages. The first at his club to coach a team to an invitation to the prestigious Australian Club championships, Janssen also coached and led two high school girls travel teams on tours of the USA in 2009 and 2012. In addition to his time at Blackburn, Janssen coached at the Basketball Victoria talent ID camps, which are responsible for identifying and harnessing some of Australia's top basketball talent.
He graduated with a bachelor's degree in exercise and sport science from Deakin University (Melbourne, Australia) in 2008, and then earned his master's degree in health and exercise science from Wake Forest in 2014. Having spent the previous 10 years in a range of teaching and research positions at Deakin, Wake Forest, UNCG, Janssen is currently completing a PhD in Kinesiology (exercise physiology) from UNCG.
James married Erika Janssen (Griffith) in April of 2017.
