DAVIDSON, N.C
. -- Davidson volleyball began league play Friday, sweeping visiting Fordham by scores of 25-22, 25-22, 25-17. The 'Cats move to 8-6 on the season and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10 and have now taken 12 straight sets from the Rams, including six consecutive in Belk Arena.

Davidson was led by outside hitters Kelly Friers and Ciera Cockrell, who each collected double-digit kills (11 and 10, respectively). The rookie duo of Ellie Crosley and Sydney Champaigne also delivered strong performances; Crosley recorded six kills for a .857 hitting percentage and six blocks, both match-bests, and Champaigne dished out 21 assists and recorded a team-high eight digs.

"I thought we had incredible energy and we executed with such great intention tonight," head coach Chris Willis said. "This was a good bounce-back match for us on the court, and I'm really proud of how we executed our game plan on the court."

The Wildcats came out with fire, taking the first seven of eight points of the match and led by as many as seven before the Rams battled back to come within one. Senior captain Mary Harriet Moore sealed the set with a decisive kill to take the frame 25-22. Moore ended up with four kills on the day and a stellar .667 clip.

The second set was a battle of cat-and-mouse, as the game saw 13 tied scores and five lead changes. Fordham led late before a surge from the 'Cats-courtesy of kills from Cockrell and Friers and blocks from Crosley and Friers- allowed Davidson to regain momentum and win 25-22.

After a tied score as late as 10-10 in Set 3, Davidson ignited, taking eight of the next 11 points to build a steady lead. Fordham strung together three straight late in the frame and looked to threaten at 22-16, before a block from junior Katharine Franz and Crosley switched the tempo. Cockrell collected the final slam for the 'Cats to pull of their fourth sweep of the season.

Davidson returns to action Sunday, welcoming another set of Rams, this time from Rhode Island, to Belk Arena. First serve slated for 1:00 p.m.
