PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Davidson's season came to an end in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse Championship Friday when top-seeded Massachusetts took a 21-6 decision to move onto the championship game at Sweeney Field on the campus of Saint Joseph's.
The Wildcats, coming off a dramatic comeback win yesterday in the quarterfinals vs. George Mason, finished the year 8-10. It was their first-ever trip to the semifinals of the league's championship.
UMass took control of the game early after senior Annie Brockett had scored the first goal of the contest for Davidson by run off an 8-0 run. It eventually would push its lead out to 13-3 at halftime and went on to win the second half as well, 8-3.
In their final collegiate games, senior co-captains Nicole Pettiglio and Annie Brockett scored twice each. Pettiglio, an A-10 All-Second Team pick this year, ended her Wildcat career with 78 goals and 86 points, including personal bests of 32 and 34 this season. She also had a career and team-high 55 draw controls, good for sixth-most in a single season, and ended with 86 total to place her 10th all-time.
Brockett leaves her name in the record books as well, ranking seventh in career goals (102) and just outside the top-10 in points with 123. She tallied a personal-best 50 goals this year, which is the third-most all-time in a single season.
Scoring the other two goals on the afternoon were Christine Molinari and Sophia Sgroi.
Five Minutewomen had multiple goals, led by Hannah Murphy's six goals and two assists for eight points. Kiley Anderson netted five goals, Hannah Burnett scored three times and Holly Turner finished with four points on two goals and two assists.
Kaitlyn Cerasi had a team-high three assists and UMass as a team dished out 13 on its 21 goals.
UMass had advantages in shots (32-21) and draw controls (22-6), while Davidson had a 13-9 edge on groundballs and went 5-for-11 on free-position shots.
Maddie Hunter, Mackenzie Sivilli and Rose Woolson each picked up two groundballs, while Pettiglio had a team-high five draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Woolson closed out season with seven saves between the pipes to give her a personal-best 165, ranking sixth in a single season. The junior also scooped up a team-high 67 groundballs, the most in a Wildcat single season to top Stephanie Hunter's 51 in 1999.
In addition to Pettiglio and Brockett, fellow classmate Kendall Thielemann also played her last game as a Wildcat. She had personal bests of seven goals, 17 assists (third-most on team) and 24 points, while starting 16 of her 18 games played this season.
