UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In his final "home at bat" of his career, senior Tyler Agard delivered in big fashion, pushing a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the 10th inning to hand Davidson the 7-6 walk-off win over Winthrop at BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte Wednesday.
It was the 'Cats second extra-inning game in as many days, and also their second straight contest hitting three homeruns or more.
Senior Will Robertson blasted his second-straight two homer contest as part of a three-hit day where he also doubled, joined by classmate Jake Sidwell and junior Alec Acosta, who also turned in three hits each. Veteran Brian Fortier had two hits, including his 15th long ball of the season.
Making his first appearance since early March due to injury, sophomore Allen Barry had a solid showing, striking out four across three innings of relief. Classmate Austin Leonard picked up his first win of the year, tossing 2.2 innings where he scattered two hits and struck out two.
For the fifth straight game, Davidson took a first-inning lead, going up 4-0 after Robertson and Fortier each blasted two-run homers. Junior Cam Johnson and Acosta each singled to give the seniors a passenger in their round trippers.
Winthrop got on the board in the third, taking advantage of a throwing error.
The 'Cats put the lead back at four in the fifth, after back-to-back doubles from Robertson and Acosta. Winthrop came to within one in the sixth courtesy of their own set of back-to-back doubles and a sacrifice fly.
The 'Cats added another cushion run in the bottom of the seventh, when Robertson belted a solo shot just beneath the left field video board.
In the top of the eighth, a miscue in the outfield allowed the Eagles to plate two runs and tie the game at 6-6.
The 'Cats left two men on in each the second and seventh innings, and another man in each the fifth and eighth innings, but were unable to bring anyone home.
Winthrop pressured in the 10th, leading off with a single, but Leonard quickly bounced back, getting a strike out, and Sidwell gunned down the runner trying to steal to quickly put two away. Another single kept the threat alive, but a smooth play from sophomore Eric Jones at third retired Winthrop with no damage done.
Enter the tenth, where Jones singled to center field with one out to get things cooking. Classmate Justin Lebek was then hit-by-pitch (a statistic he ranks nationally in), and Sidwell singled up the middle to load the bases.
Agard took the second pitch he saw sending it high but shallow into left field, where Jones tested the left fielder's arm and plated the game winner.
The 'Cats have now hit 55 home runs on the year, the most since 2009, when they blasted 66.
The team will take the weekend off for finals, but returns to action next week, traveling to Amherst, Mass., for their final league series of the year, facing UMass on Thursday and Friday, May 18 and 19.
