‘Cats Pull Out Thrilling 13-12 Comeback Win Saturday

DAVIDSON, N.C.  —  Davidson earned a thrilling comeback victory Saturday in Atlantic 10 women's lacrosse action by scoring the final three goals of the game to pull out a 13-12 decision at home vs. Duquesne inside Richardson Stadium on a sunny afternoon.
 
Trailing the entire game until the final three minutes, the Wildcats (5-8, 3-3 A-10) tied the score up at 12-all with 2:25 left and then with 1:03 remaining senior Annie Brockett scored the game-winner to make it 13-12. Duquesne had one last chance to tie it up, earning the draw control, but its shot with 11 seconds on the clock went wide and the 'Cats held on.
 
Christine Molinari, who started the winning rally with a goal at the 9:06 mark, led the way offensively with a career-high four goals and matched her career-best with five points overall.
 
Nicole Pettiglio had her third game this year with four goals to tie a personal best. Her last one came on a free-position shot at 2:25 on the clock.
 
Shayne Antolini matched her season best with three points on two goals and an assist, while Brockett scored twice and Genna Portner added a goal. Picking up one assist each were Molinari, Kendall Thielemann and Jordan Wood.
 
The Dukes' (2-12, 0-6 A-10) duo of Jill Vacanti and Rilee Bradshaw scored three goals each, while Sarah Kollhoff added two of her own. Haley Matthai registered three points on a goal and two assists.
 
Duquesne led from the start, getting the first two goals of the game at the 29:24 and 27:47 marks in the first half. It would lead by as many as four goals twice in the first half.
 
Behind back-to-back goals from Antolini on free-position attempts, Davidson cut its deficit to one at 8-7 with 5:20 to go. The Dukes scored the final two goals of the half with under 30 seconds to make it 10-7.
 
A Molinari goal with 22:43 in the second half got the 'Cats to within one goal again at 11-10 before Duquesne put its last goal on the board at the 13:25 mark for a 12-10 lead.
 
Between the pipes, Rose Woolson finished with nine saves and a team-high four groundballs.
 
Mackenzie Sivilli filled the stat sheet with three groundballs, two draw controls and one of Davidson's five caused turnovers on the day. Sophia Sgroi picked up a career-high four draw controls, while three other Wildcats scooped up three apiece.
 
The Wildcats held advantages in shots (31-26) and draw controls (19-8), while going 4-for-9 on free-position attempts. Duquesne picked up a game-high 20 groundballs and was 17-of-20 on clear attempts.
 
Davidson will play its final two road games of the regular season next weekend, traveling to VCU and La Salle, April 21-23.
