NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Freshman Axel Fries made it two weeks in a row, and five times overall, being named the Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week, as the league office announced the weekly awards today for matches played from March 13-19.
The five rookie of the week honors is the most in program history, while the Wildcats have six weekly awards overall this year.
Despite seeing his season-high 12-match singles winning streak come to an end, the freshman still went 3-1 last week in matches at home vs. USC-Upstate and George Mason. Fries helped the Wildcats finish 3-0 on their homestand, and win their sixth and seventh straight matches at home.
The Stockholm, Sweden, native fell in his first singles match of the week, 6-4, 6-2, to halt his impressive singles win streak, but came back to score a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 3 vs. the Patriots on Sunday. The A-10 win kept him perfect on the season at 5-0 and ran his overall record to a team-best 14-2.
In doubles action, Fries teamed with J.B. Gough at No. 1 to tally 6-1 and 7-5 wins. The two victories pushed their win streak to a team-best seven straight and increased their record to 13-3 overall, while remaining unbeaten in A-10 matches at 5-0.
Davidson (13-4, 4-1 A-10) next plays at College of Charleston and The Citadel, March 25-26.
