NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — After another undefeated week, Davidson men's tennis freshman Axel Fries was honored by being named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the fourth time, as announced today by the league office for matches played from March 6-12.
Fries gave the Wildcats their fifth weekly honor this year, with David Hager collecting the other award. Since joining the A-10 in the 2014-15, Davidson has won nine rookie of the week honors.
A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Fries went 4-0 combined in singles and doubles in leading the 'Cats to wins over Bethune-Cookman and Saint Joseph's last week. The freshman's four wins kept his singles and doubles winning streaks intact at 12 and five, respectively.
Fries registering his 11th consecutive win vs. Bethune-Cookman by giving up just one game in a dominating 6-1, 6-0 performance at No. 3. He moved to 2-0 at that position and 12-1 overall on the year.
Then on Sunday in an A-10 match vs. the Hawks, he came back from falling in his first set, 7-5, to roll up 6-0, 6-0 wins in his next two sets. Fries pushed his singles record to a team-best 13-1, while remaining perfect in A-10 matches at 3-0. The freshman's win streak ties teammates Artem Khrapko's 12 in a row set in 2015.
