DAVIDSON, N.C. — The duo of junior David Hager and freshman Axel Fries were both honored by the Atlantic 10 today as they were named the men's tennis player and rookie of the weeks by the league office.
It is the first weekly honors this season for Davidson, with Fries earning his first career honor. Hager collected his second career player of the week award and third overall after winning rookie performer of the week in 2015.
The pair led the Wildcats to their fourth and fifth straight wins this past week with wins against Wingate and North Carolina A&T at home. They combined to go 6-0 together in singles and doubles.
Hager kept his season-opening win streak alive at seven straight by taking 6-3, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-0 decisions at No. 2. The two wins also continued his personal-best win streak dating back to last season is 10 overall. He owns a career singles record of 32-10.
The freshman Fries, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, continued his impressive start by pushing his win streak to five straight. Fries needed a super tie-breaker vs. Wingate to capture a 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) before blanking his Aggie opponent, 6-0, 6-0. The freshman is an impressive 6-1 on the year, with five of those wins coming at No. 5.
In doubles action, the freshman teamed with J.B. Gough at No. 1 to score wins of 6-3 and 6-1 to move their record to a team-best 5-2 on the season.
Davidson (6-1) next goes on the road for a pair of matches in Blacksburg, Va., Feb. 11, where it will take on St. Bonaventure in a neutral site match and then play Virginia Tech.
