Fries Earns Second A-10 Rookie of Week Award

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Freshman Axel Fries grabbed his second weekly award as the conference office announced today he was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for men's tennis.
It is the third weekly award for Davidson, as Fries won his first rookie honor back on Feb. 7 with David Hager.
Fries continued his impressive freshman season by winning his team-leading eighth straight singles match and added a doubles victory in the Wildcats' match vs. Presbyterian, Feb. 18. The Stockholm, Sweden native, teamed with J.B. Gough to secure the doubles point by winning a 7-4 tie-breaker decision at No. 1.
Fries then nailed down an 11-9 super tie-breaker win to determine his match at No. 5 singles, splitting his first two sets by the counts of 4-6 and 6-3. Fries is a team-best 9-1 on the season, with seven of those wins coming at No. 5.
Davidson heads on the road for a pair of matches this weekend, going to Radford Feb. 25 before playing at VCU the next day in an Atlantic 10 match.
