FAIRFAX, Va. — Despite its best first two quarters of the season, Davidson was unable to maintain its success in the final two quarters and dropped a 74-61 decision to George Mason on the road in both teams' Atlantic 10 women's basketball opener inside Eaglebank Arena.
It was a tale of two halves, as the Wildcats (5-9, 0-1 A-10) led by 21 points in the second quarter (45-24) and had season highs of 23 and 22 points in the first and second quarters, respectively. They also nailed a combined seven triples, the most since hitting that many against Elon, Dec. 6, for the game.
The Patriots countered by use a 17-2 run to start the third quarter to get back in the game and then overtook the 'Cats in the fourth by outscoring them 20-6 for their 11th straight home win. Mason outscored Davidson 47-16 combined in the second half.
Junior Justine Lyon led three Wildcats in double figures with 14 points, her 11th straight game scoring in double digits, and added five rebounds and four assists. She had just two points though in the final two quarters.
Katie Turner added 13 points, while Kianna Speight came off the bench for a season-best 11. The duo swished home three shots each from downtown. After nailing seven triples in the first two quarters, the Wildcats finished 0-for-7 in the last two quarters.
George Mason (12-3, 1-0 A-10) had four players score in double figures, paced by Natalie Butler's double-double on 19 points and a single-game school record 28 rebounds. Nicole Cardano-Hillary scored 18 points, Jacy Bolton had 14 points to go with six boards and five assists, and Sarah Kaminski added 12 points.
Davidson, which led for over 32 minutes of the game, saw Mason take its first lead at 58-57 with over six minutes left. Later, a Turner floater in the lane make it 63-61 and 1:46 on the clock, but it would be the last bucket of the game for the Wildcats, who went 0-for-9 from the floor. Mason closed on an 11-0 run to finish the win off.
Behind Lyon's 10 first-quarter points, Davidson started out strong going up nine points early and ending the quarter up 23-12.
The 'Cats caught fire in the second quarter from behind the arc going 5-of-6 to push their lead out to 20 at the five-minute mark. Turner and Speight drilled four consecutive triples during a 14-0 run, helping to turn a 26-20 lead into a 40-20 advantage and eventually a 45-27 lead at the break.
The Wildcats return home to take on Duquesne, Jan. 4, at 7 p.m. and will also host Rhode Island next weekend, Jan. 7.
GAME NOTES: This was the fifth meeting all-time between both teams after they faced each other last year twice … Mason leads 3-2 in the series … the Wildcats are 12-13 all-time in league openers (12-9 during a 21-year run in the SoCon, 0-4 in the A-10) … they are now 4-7 when playing their league opener on the road, going 0-2 in the A-10 … Justine Lyon has scored in double figures in 34 of her the last 37 games overall dating back to last season… it was the ninth game this year Lyon has led the team in scoring … Davidson had a season-best 30 points off turnovers, while Mason had a 54-36 lead in rebounds, 19 of them on the offense … the Wildcats dished out 16 assists, giving them 76 combined in the last five games.
