DAVIDSON, N.C. — Freshman Katie Turner capped off her outstanding week before Christmas by being named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office, while Justine Lyon was named College Sports Madness Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for games played from Dec. 18-24.
Turner is the second Wildcat this season to grab the top rookie of the week honor, joining Sarah Donovan who won the weekly award, Nov. 20. The duo are the second and third players, respectively, since Davidson joined the A-10 to earn rookie of the week with Mackenzie Latt twice garnering the honor in 2014-15.
Lyon, who was also named to the A-10 Weekly Honor Roll, becomes the first Wildcat this year to earn the weekly player of the week by the website CollegeSportsMadness.com. Recently, Latt was a weekly award winner last season and Dakota Dukes grabbed the weekly award from the website in 2015-16.
A native of Reno, Nev., Turner led Davidson to a 2-0 week with wins over High Point (82-74) on the road and Charlotte (68-66) at home by averaging 12 points and shooting 8-of-16 from the field, including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc. She also dished out seven assists, with five of them coming in the win vs. Charlotte.
Turner recorded her second-highest scoring performance of the season with 17 points in the victory against the 49ers and closed out the game by hitting the game-winning three-pointer to give Davidson a 68-66 lead with 37 seconds left on the clock.
Lyon had a stellar week during Davidson's two wins, averaging a team-best 22 points per game, while hauling in 8.5 rebounds, dishing out 6.0 assists and pocketing 2.5 steals per game.
The junior from Durham, N.C., led the 'Cats to a big comeback win at High Point by scoring a season-high 25 points and hauling in a career-best 13 rebounds for her second career double-double. She helped them overcome a 19-point third quarter deficit by netting 18 of their season-best 31 points to go with six rebounds in the fourth quarter alone.
The shooting guard ended the week with a 19-point outing vs. the 49ers and dished out a career-high seven assists.
Following a seven-day Christmas break, the Wildcats close out the calendar year with a trip to UCF, Dec. 28.
