DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson senior Will Cooley ended the match on a high note, claiming the 285-pound weight class, but wrestling fell in Southern Conference action to Chattanooga Saturday at Belk Arena, 43-3.
With the loss Davidson falls to 1-4 in duals this season and 0-2 in the SoCon, while with the win Chattanooga improves to 2-1 and 2-0 in league dual meet contests.
Cooley jumped out early with a takedown in the first period and added to it with another in the third to help seal the 5-1 decision over Jared Walker and prevent the team shutout.
Junior 157-pounder, Tony Palumbo, battled through a scoreless first period with Moc Dylan Forzani. Forzani got on the board first with an escape to start the second frame and used a takedown to gap Palumbo 3-0 in the third and held on for a 3-1 decision over Davidson's leader in wins. It was the eighth consecutive match for Palumbo decided by a decision. Entering Saturday, he had won six of his last seven bouts all by way of decision.
Senior Dustin Runzo battled in a 10-8 loss to Chris Debien in a back-and-forth affair at 141 pounds.
Davidson returns after the break on Jan. 6 at the F&M Open hosted by Franklin & Marshall.
