THE SERIES
The Wildcats and Camels are set to face-off for the final time as PFL foes as Campbell heads to the Big South Conference in 2018. CU takes a 5-4 series advantage into Saturday's tilt after snapping the tie last season in Buies Creek. Davidson has lost four straight to the Camels after starting 4-1 in the first five matchups.
#TRENDINGNOW
Junior punter Charles Morris was named the PFL Specials Teams Player of the Week and a STATS FCS Specials Teams Player of the Week honorable mention earlier this week! Morris averaged 34.7 yards-per-punt on 10 attempts in his first career start last week at Drake. The Bulldgos average starting field position after punts was the 21-yard line and one of his boots resulted in a turnover, forced by Brayden Sims and recovered by Ryan Samuels. He also notched a new career-long of 52 yards.
LAST TIME OUT
Nearing the end of the opening half down just 14-12 Davidson looked very much in the ballgame, but a late Dayton touchdown swung momentum in the Flyers favor as the Wildcats struggled in the second half of a 48-22 home loss. Freshman quarterback Tyler Phelps completed 18-of-39 passes for 190 yards, throwing and rushing for a touchdown in the losing effort, while also throwing an interception returned for a TD. Freshman running back Wesley Dugger had 19 carries for 86 yards, while sophomore James Story had his best day in the backfield, churning out 76 yards in 14 carries.
HONORARY CAPTAIN
The honorary captain for the game will be Kearns Davis '91. Davis was a three-year letterwinner for the 'Cats at wide receiver. Over his career he reigistered 31 catches for 501 yards and four touchdowns. Davis went on to become a federal prosecutor and was president of the North Carolina Bar Association.
LAST TIME THEY MET
The Wildcats were shutout on the road last season in Buies Creek, 28-0. DC's Stockton McGuire completed 9-of-37 passes, three to Jaris Scott for 66 yards. McGuire led the ground game with 68 yards on 17 carries. Campbell's Anthony Robbins completed 15-of-24 passes for 198 yards with two TDs and two INTs. Stephen Shank made eight tackles for the 'Cats, while Cody Mitchell and George Hatalowich each picked off a Camel pass in the losing effort.
Senior kicker Seth Stancil was put in the Football Player Spotlight this week!
ANOTHER ONE
For the fourth consecutive year Davidson football earned an Allstate AFCA Good Works Team nominee. Senior linebacker Ryan Samuel joins Matt Casey, Chris Woods and Nate Casey, in succession, as a Wildcat nominee for this prestigious distinction.
NEW ADDITIONS TO THE STAFF
Paul Nichols added four new coaches to the fold, two on each side of the ball. Hank Hughes (Springfield, '79) boasts an impressive resume having worked at the NCAA FBS level for 20 years. He most recently worked as defensive line coach for Nebraska in the Big 10 in 2015. With an extended stay at the University of Connecticut from 2001-13, Hughes helped lead the Huskies to five bowl games and the 2012 team to a ninth place rank in the country in total defense and seventh against the run. Jeff McDaniels (Davidson, '14) returns to his alma as cornerbacks coach. McDaniels comes back after spending two seasons with Texas State University working with offensive skill players and special teams.
On the offensive side, Laymarr Marshall (Duke, '98) will coach the running backs. Marshall spent the last 18 seasons at Mt. Tabor High School where he was head coach since 2008. While at Duke, Marshall earned Academic All-ACC honors in 1995 and was a three-year starter at running back. Tim Zetts (Akron, '09) will serve as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Zetts spent the last two seasons at John Carroll University where he was named interim head coach last season to go with his offensive coordinator duties.
