KINGSTON, R.I. -- Davidson junior Ciera Cockrell led the Wildcats in a comeback victory Friday at Rhode Island, winning 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-22). The 'Cats improve to 9-12 overall and pick up their second win in conference play.
The outside hitter posted a team-best 11 kills and assisted in four blocks. Classmate Mason Rooney recorded her sixth double-double of the season (also has four triple-doubles), recording 11 digs and 18 assists. She added six kills and three service aces.
"This wasn't our best performance of the year, but the team was resilient, and fought hard," head coach Chris Willis said. "We have a lot to be proud of despite the adversity we've had this year. The result was a testament to our perseverance and positivity."
Davidson started sluggish in the opening frame, falling by a seven-point deficit at 18-25. After dropping behind by that same margin in Set 2, the 'Cats rallied, reaching a 16-16 stalemate. A Rhody service error turned the lead in favor of Davidson, but alas it was short lived as the Rams and 'Cats tied four more times before a Cockrell kill and back row slam from fellow junior Sam Thompson secured the set 25-23.
Split in the match 1-1, Davidson dominated Game 3, maintaining a six to eight point lead for most of the frame before taking it 25-18.
Although holding the advantage in the match at 2-1, the fourth frame was a cat-and-mouse affair, with a remarkable 17 tied scores. After two kills by Cockrell late in the frame gave the 'Cats some edge, Rhody committed back-to-back miscues to give Davidson the 3-1 victory.
The Wildcats continue their road trip, traveling to the Bronx, N.Y., to face Fordham Sunday. Davidson has taken the last 12 straight sets from Fordham.
