CHARLOTTE, N.C. The Davidson women's tennis team dropped just two matches combined in singles and doubles over the two-day Charlotte 49ers Invitational, Oct. 13-14, against host Charlotte, Wofford and Coastal Carolina at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
Five different players went undefeated in singles action, while all four Wildcat doubles teams were perfect over the two days.
In singles play, Lindsay Song, Alyssa Hahn and Ava Todd each had 3-0 records. Song tallied a 6-3, 6-2 decision against her Wofford opponent followed by a thrilling 10-8 super tie-breaker win against Megan Smith of Charlotte after the players split the first two sets, 6-1, 5-7. The freshman capped off her prefect weekend with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Coastal Carolina.
Fellow classmate Hahn rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win against Sam Russell of Wofford, then downed Charlotte's Gabrela Gonzalez in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. To finish off the undefeated weekend, the freshman pulled out a 10-4 super tie-breaker win against Coastal Carolina after falling in the first set, 6-3, before coming back with a 6-4 victory.
Todd won three straight-set matches in giving up just eight games against her Wofford (6-0, 6-3), Charlotte (6-2, 6-0) and Coastal Carolina (6-2, 6-1) opponents.
Gabrielle Centenari took home 6-4, 6-2 and 6-3, 7-6(5) wins at No. 3 singles against Wofford and Charlotte. Alexandra Abele also won twice behind 6-1, 6-0 and 6-2, 7-5 decisions against Britt Wilbur of Wofford and Sara Bondar of CCU.
In doubles action, three of the four Wildcat teams went 3-0. Scoring a win at No. 1 was Megan Scholvinck and Hahn with an 8-6 tie-breaker decision against Charlotte, then dropped down to No. 2 for 6-4 and 6-3 wins against CCU and Wofford.
Centenari and Abele teamed together at No. 3 to take home 6-3, 6-1 and 6-4 triumphs, while Song and Todd played at No. 4 position, collecting 6-3, 7-5 and 6-3 victories against Charlotte, Coastal and Wofford.
The final team of Ally Sexton and Anna Catharine Feaster tallied 6-3 and 6-4 wins at No. 2.
Davidson will next play at the USTA/ITA Regional Championship, Oct. 19-22 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
