FAIRFAX, Va. -- Junior captain Mason Rooney recorded her fourth triple-double of the season, but the performance wasn't enough to power the 'Cats, who suffered a sweep Friday to George Mason (19-25, 29-31, 22-25). The Wildcats slip to 8-11 overall and 1-5 in conference play, while Mason improves to 6-13 overall and 2-5 in the Atlantic 10.
Rooney registered 10 kills, 18 assists and 11 digs to tie for the national lead in triple doubles. Classmates Katharine Franz and Ciera Cockrell each turned in nine kills, as Franz delivered a .368 hitting percentage.
After being tied 11-11 in the opening frame, Mason broke loose to record eight of the next 11 points, building a steady lead to take the opening set 25-19.
The second frame saw an incredible 13 ties and six lead changes, as the Patriots had set point at 24-21 before Davidson recorded three straight, including a service ace from new sophomore serve specialist Emily Kane. After Franz connected on a slam to even the score, 25-25, Mason went up by one before Cockrell recorded a kill of her own.
Senior Mary Harriet Moore added a kill to give Davidson set point at 29-28, but the Patriots then recorded a kill and back-to-back aces to steal the frame, 31-29.
The 'Cats were tied 19-19 in Set 3 before Mason capitalized on three late Davidson miscues to pull off the sweep.
Davidson continues its road trip, traveling to Washington, D.C., to face George Washington on Saturday.
