FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Led by David Hager, the Davidson men's tennis team capped off a successful trip to the Northeast with another 7-0 win, this time over host Fairfield Sunday afternoon inside the Cullen-Hayman Tennis Center.
Hager won his fifth straight singles match to start the year and pushed his personal best streak to eight consecutive dating back to the end of last season. The junior rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at No. 2 to improve his career record to 30-10.
Davidson as a team ran its record to 4-1 with its third straight victory, which included an A-10 opening win at Fordham Saturday.
The match started out as a battle in doubles as Fairfield (2-2) won the top spot, 6-3, before the 'Cats netted a 6-2 decision at No. 2 by the pair of Shamael Chaudhry and Jack Riazzi. The duo of Hager and Artem Khrapko, playing for the first time in doubles together this year, fended off the Stags at No. 3 to earn the team point with a 7-5 decision.
The Wildcats then dominated singles play, earning three wins by the score of 6-0, 6-0. Joining Hager in the win column with that match score was Gough at No. 4 and freshman Axel Fries at No. 5, as both of them won their third straight singles matches.
The pair of Chaudhry and Khrapko needed a super tie-breaker to determine their two matches at No. 1 and 3 positions. Chaudhry lost the first set, 6-3, but earned a 6-2 win in the next set and then finished his match off with a 10-6 tie-breaker win. Fellow classmate Khrapko needed an extra game to win the first set, 7-5, but fell 6-4 in the next one to force the tie-breaker, which he doubled up his Stag opponent, 10-5, to secure his third straight singles win.
Playing his first singles match of the season was Ricky Saad at No. 6 and he impressed with a nice 6-3, 6-1 victory.
Davidson returns home to host a doubleheader, Feb. 4, against Wingate and North Carolina A&T. Match times are set for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
