Davidson Battles GW to the End Before Falling 76-62

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Junior Mackenzie Latt recorded her sixth double-double of the season and nearly helped the Wildcats down host George Washington before the Colonials used a fourth quarter run to take a 76-62 decision Sunday afternoon inside Charles E. Smith Center in Atlantic 10 women's basketball action.
Davidson saw its one-point lead heading into the final quarter erased when GW (11-6, 4-1 A-10) opened with a 13-3 spurt to go up 56-47 with 5:39 to go. The Wildcats got with five, 58-53, a few minutes later on a Justine Lyon layup, but they were unable to get any closer the rest of the way.
The Colonials sealed the win by going 12-for-14 at the charity stripe in the final two minutes. Davidson was also hurt by nine turnovers in the quarter, which resulted in 13 GW points.
Latt finished with game high honors of 21 points and 10 rebounds, while pocketing three steals and dishing out two assists. The 20-point outing was her fourth of the season and the ninth of her career.
Lyon also reached double figures with 14 points, while adding six rebounds and four assists. Rachel Piles scored eight points and Melanie Ransom had seven off the bench.
Four players for the Colonials scored in double figures, led by Shannon Cranshaw's 15 points off the bench, 12 of which came from behind the arc. Lexi Martin scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds, while Kelli Prange had 12 and Mei-Lyn Bautista scored 10.
Prange and Martin scored a combined 10 of the 13 points during GW's game-changing run.
Latt had helped the Wildcats open up a 37-31 lead in the first three minutes of the third quarter with six points during an 8-2 run. She finished the quarter with eight points and the 'Cats led 44-43.
GW had a 13-6 lead after the first quarter and would stretch its advantage to 21-8 early in the second quarter before Davidson got on an offensive roll. It ran off a season-best 19-0 run over a six-minute stretch to grab a six-point lead (27-21) with 2:13 left before halftime. Seven different Wildcats scored during the spurt with Ransom dropping in four points.
Both teams would head into halftime knotted at 29-all after Latt drained a jumper in the key with 13.2 ticks left.
Next up, Davidson returns for a two-game stay as it starts by hosting George Mason, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m.
