DAVIDSON, N.C. — Hailey Leidel scored a game-high 20 points and banked in a three-pointer as time expired to lift Massachusetts over Davidson, 61-60, in Atlantic 10 women's basketball action Thursday at Belk Arena during the Wildcats' Education Day.
Leidel's second game-winner of the season came after the 'Cats' Saadia Timpton was unable to convert her second free-throw attempt with six seconds to play.
Maggie Mulligan (14 point, 10 rebounds) and Ryan Holder also scored in double figures for UMass (8-10, 2-3 A-10), which converted 23-of-26 free throws.
Justine Lyon led the way for the Wildcats with 19 points, her seventh straight game in double figures, while adding seven rebounds, a career-high six assists and a season-best four steals.
Mackenzie Latt recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds. She set a personal record by scoring in double digits for the 13th consecutive game.
Trailing 57-56, Chloe Johnson drilled a three-pointer from the left wing to put Davidson (2-14, 0-4 A-10) up with 2:09 left.
UMass, which led by three (12-9) after the opening period, used a 14-5 spurt early in the second period to take a 10-point advantage before going into the half up, 37-29.
The Wildcats started the third quarter with seven unanswered and outscored UMass 14-7 in the frame to cut the deficit to one, 44-43, entering the final period.
Despite the setback, Davidson finished with a 46-30 advantage on the glass, including tying a season high with 21 offensive rebounds. In addition, the Wildcats' bench outscored the Minutewomen, 20-0. Melanie Ransom had a career-high nine points off the bench to go with three rebounds, while Kyla Roland added six points and a season-best seven boards, five of which came on offense end for a personal best.
Davidson will travel to the Nation's Capital next for a 2 p.m. nationally-televised (CBSSN) contest at George Washington Sunday afternoon.
GAME NOTES: This was just the third meeting all-time between the two schools women's basketball programs … UMass has won all three games now … Latt pushed her career double-double total to 18 … Davidson hit the 40-rebound mark for the ninth time this year, while pushing its double-digit streak in offensive rebounds to 17 games in a row … the Wildcats dished out 15 assists, the eighth straight game with 10 or more.
