RICHMOND, Va. – Davidson senior Will Brewster claimed the individual win to help the 'Cats to a second place result at the Spider Alumni Open hosted by Richmond University Saturday at Pole Green Park.
Brewster snapped the tape for the 'Cats, traversing the 5,000 meter course in 15:07.1 for the opening race victory. Brewster is the second consecutive Wildcat to win this race as Ryan Phillips '16 took the win a year ago.
Davidson tallied 43 points with four runners placing in the top-10 overall. William & Mary took the team win with 20 points.
"Today was a very solid opener for our team. The guys showed their fitness from a strong summer of training, putting them in a good position to improve as the season goes on," said Head Coach Renny Waldron. "Will Brewster was impressive in victory, and our newcomers excelled in their first race in a Davidson uniform."
Senior John Mogen was the next 'Cat to cross the line in eighth place with a time of 15:28.9. Junior Ramsay Ritchie followed, placing ninth in 15:29.4. In his first collegiate meet, freshman Sam Thomas crossed the line in 11th overall, scoring for his team with a time of 15:36.8. The final scorer for Waldron's squad was sophomore Dylan Carmack in 23rd (15:51.6).
The site of the race, Pole Green Park, is the setting for the Atlantic 10 Championship later this season.
"Having experience on this A-10 Championship course will be invaluable when we return in November," said Waldron.
Davidson next toes the line Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt University.
