NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Despite resting a pair of top runners, the Davidson men's cross country team placed 11th of 23 teams at the Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt University Saturday.
The 'Cats, led by senior Will Brewster's 25th place finish, registered 310 points for 11th overall as a team. Middle Tennessee State claimed the team victory with 63 points, while Edwin Kibichiy of Louisville snapped the tape for the individual crown.
For the second consecutive race Brewster crossed the line first for Davidson. The Grayslake, Ill., native traversed the 8,000 meter course in 25:26.8.
Next through the chute was sophomore Dylan Carmack and freshman Sam Thomas, making his 8k debut. The duo finished back-to-back with times of 25:47.2 and 25.48.6, respectively.
"Today was a solid day for our team. We were without our number two and number three runners, so we took a little bit of a hit in terms of team scoring, but we are happy with our progression," said head coach Renny Waldron. "Dylan Carmack's fitness has seen a lot of improvement over the past couple of weeks and it was great to see him run well. Freshman Sam Thomas had an excellent 8k debut on a tough course and is certainly positioning himself to be one of the top rookies in the Atlantic 10."
Junior Michael Schroeder (26:34.2) and sophomore Will Jones (26:53.6) rounded out the scoring runners for the Wildcats.
Davidson returns to the start line Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Greater Louisville Open hosted by the University of Louisville.
