DAVIDSON, N.C. --- The Davidson women's tennis team begins their 2016-17 season by playing their first Fall event this weekend when they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., to take part in the annual Wake Forest Invitational, Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
This will be the sixth straight season the Wildcats will participate in the invitational and the third consecutive year it opens their Fall season there. Last year saw a total of 10 Wildcats take part in the invitational, playing singles and doubles against a strong field of competition. For a full recap, click here.
The 'Cats' other three Fall events this year will be at the Charlotte Invitational (Oct. 14-15), the USTA/ITA Regional Championship (Oct. 20-24) and the Kitty Harrison Invitational on the campus of North Carolina, Nov. 4-6. Davidson participated in all three of those events last year as well.
Entering its third year under the guidance of head coach Sara Anundsen O'Leary, Davidson is coming off an outstanding campaign in 2016. O'Leary was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year after guiding the team to an 18-5 overall record, going a perfect 6-0 in A-10 matches and reaching the league's championship match for the first time before falling to VCU. The 18-win campaign was the most victories for the program since a 19-win season in 2008, which happened to be the last time they also reached a conference tournament final when they were members of the Southern Conference. O'Leary also led the Wildcats to an 11-match win streak during the season, which was one away from tying the second longest in program history of 12 in 2005.
The Wildcats return five of their six starters, led by A-10 First-Team picks Anna Catharine Feaster and Ava Todd along with second-team member sophomore Gabrielle Centenari. The junior duo of Feaster and Todd picked up right where they left off after standout first years, both going 14-6 in singles play as sophomores last year at No. 1 and 2 positions, respectively.
Having a great debut season was Centenari, who stepped right into the starting lineup along with fellow classmate Megan Scholvinck. The first-year player started out as the 'Cats' No. 4 singles player and by the end of the season moved up to No. 2 in her last six matches. Centenari was third on the team with a 13-7 record, including matching Todd with a perfect 5-0 mark in A-10 matches.
