DAVIDSON, N.C. – Rian Phillips' header off a corner kick with 14:11 remaining lifted Appalachian State to a 2-1 victory over Davidson in non-conference men's soccer action Saturday night at Alumni Stadium.

The win moves the Mountaineers to 2-5-1, while the Wildcats fall to 1-6-0.

After Maxi Pragnell missed just wide in the opening minutes, the senior tri-captain set up Jon Creel's first collegiate goal, which banked in off the far post at the 14:01 mark.

Stephen Chapman's penalty kick following a Wildcat handball in the box evened the score less than three minutes later.

Davidson's best chances in the second half came off a Pragnell header that missed just high and a Cort Coxhead attempt that was struck right at the Mountaineers' keeper.

Appalachian State finished with a 12-9 edge in shots, while Andrew Kenneson led both goalies with five saves for the Wildcats. Both teams had eight corner kicks.

Tonight's meeting marked the 61st all-time between the former Southern Conference foes.

Up Next
Davidson will conclude its brief homestand with a 7 p.m. kickoff against in-state foe and nationally-ranked Wake Forest Tuesday at Alumni Stadium.

Matt Spear's Postgame Comments
Congrats to Appalachian State, they played well. It was two teams that are still finding their way this season, and Appalachian was sharper in the critical moments.

I have been long friends with their coaches – Jeff Bilyk coached with me here several years ago and I have seen Jason a lot in his previous stops UNC, Saint Louis, Elon, and Wake Forest.

Conceding two more set piece goals made the result harder. We must improve on defending in the box.

We did not create as many chances as I would have liked – and that's due to too many turnovers – but we did have enough clear chances to get the victory.

Maxi had a great chance on the one on one in the opening seconds, plus the header in the second half that went over. Ned Morrissett, Cort Coxhead and Charlie Caswell all had good looks too.

Of course I am thrilled for Jon Creel to get his first college goal. He took the chance very well.

The team will push on and the staff will keep striving to spark the winning formula. The guys have to stay positive, and they may need to step out of their comfort zones a bit more and get a bit grittier.

Of course, we have an amazing opportunity to host a ranked ACC team, which excites me and I trust ignites the players.
