NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Davidson women's cross country team recorded seven runners under 19 minutes to place 17th at the Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt University Saturday.
The 'Cats were led by freshman Susannah Cate who set a new personal best time over a muddy 5k course, crossing the line in 18:18.3. The Wildcats tallied 442 points.
Eastern Michigan claimed the team title, while Karissa Schweizer of Missouri was the individual medalist.
"We had a really good effort with a couple of our top runners! Freshman Susannah Cate stepped up to run a personal best of 18:18 on a tough muddy course! We had an hour weather delay so the girls had to re-warm up which isn't ideal … they showed a lot of resiliency," said head coach Jen Straub. "We also had seven runners under 19 minutes which we haven't done in a while. I am happy with our progress and look forward to having our complete team in Louisville!"
Junior Sarah Sears was the second Davidson runner to enter the chute, traversing the course in 18:27.5. The final three scoring 'Cats were separated by less than seven seconds led by junior Laurel Sheffield in 18:42.2. A few runners later senior Hayden Bates finished up (18:45.8), while senior Caroline Turner rounded out the scoring (18:49.0).
The 'Cats return to the start line Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Greater Louisville Open hosted by the University of Louisville.
