LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Led by sophomore Caroline Yarbrough, the women's cross country team posted its fastest average team race of the season, placing 20th at the Greater Louisville Classic Saturday.
Yarbrough, a Greensboro, N.C., native came in under 18 minutes in her first outing of the season, crossing the line in 17:59.9.
The young Davidson squad proved the future looks bright as the top five runners featured two freshman, two juniors and a sophomore.
"We had another strong team race in a very large and highly competitive field of 36 teams," said head coach Jen Straub.
Freshman Susannah Cate was second for the 'Cats, traversing the 5k course in 18:06.9. Classmate and two-sport athlete, Maddie Hunter, was third with a season-best time of 18:12.7. Hunter will turn in her spikes for a lacrosse stick in the spring for Davidson.
The final two scorers, junior's Sarah Sears and Laurel Sheffield posted big personal best times. Sears crossed the line with an 18:17.5 performance, while Sheffield came in at 18:26.7.
"The team continues to improve as we get ready for championship season," said Straub.
